The Rockefeller University
Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS)
The Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) is dedicated to developing and conducting clinical and translational research that positively impacts health. Building on Rockefeller University Hospital’s history as the birthplace of American biomedical science and translational research, and funded in part by an NIH Center for Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), the CCTS is designed to provide an optimal infrastructure to support to support interdisciplinary collaborations, and to nurture and train the next generation of physician scientists committed to patient-oriented research.
Through education, outreach, and research, the CCTS works to engage and collaborate with community partners to address issues affecting the communities they serve, and to accelerate the discovery and dissemination of research findings that improve health and reduce health disparities. Additional information can be found on the Rockefeller CCTS websites regarding the CCTS, educational and training opportunities, and the CCTS community engagement activities and partnerships.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Disparities in Adverse Perinatal Outcomes including Depression
Speaker:
Eynav E. Accortt, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Clinical Psychologist, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cedars-Sinai, Los Angeles, CA
Summary of Session Goals:
African American women have the highest rates of prenatal and postpartum depression as well as adverse perinatal outcomes (e.g. preterm delivery & low birth weight babies) compared to other racial groups in the U.S. They are at increased risk for vitamin D deficiency because darker skin limits synthesis of vitamin D and due to lower intake of supplemental vitamin D. An exciting and novel area of research focuses on vitamin D’s anti-inflammatory properties and possible anti-depressant effects.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify symptoms, prevalence and consequences of depression and anxiety in pregnancy and postpartum, with a focus on racial disparities
2. Learn about the links between perinatal depression and vitamin D and inflammation
3. Become familiar with research on adverse perinatal outcomes, including depression, and postpartum multi-systemic dysregulation, as measured by high allostatic load

2014 The Beatrice Renfield Lectureship in Research Nursing: Implementation of Evidence-Based Nursing: Implications for Leadership, Education, and Practice
Speaker:
Lily Thomas, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, Vice President, System Nursing Research,, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System
Sponsor:
Rockefeller University
Session Summary:
The Rockefeller University and the Heilbrunn Family Center for Research Nursing are delighted to announce that Dr. Lily Thomas, a leader in the application of evidence-based approaches to nursing care, will deliver the 2014 Beatrice Renfield lecture. As Vice President of System Nursing Research at North Shore-LIJ Health System, Dr. Thomas has built and sustained a culture of inquiry in a 16-hospital health system that employs approximately 11,000 nurses. A clinical nurse researcher, she has played a key role in several nationwide studies and programs aimed at developing more effective approaches to patient care. She has also contributed to a number of large-scale implementations designed to optimize care delivery and patient outcomes.
Highlights of her contributions include: conducting a national study on preventing medication administration errors; designing large-scale implementation of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Team STEPPS system with a significant improvement in the quality and culture of safety; and facilitating the discovery of Trombley-Brennan Terminal Tissue Injury and its impact on end-of-life care. Dr. Thomas has designed, tested, and disseminated several successful evidence-based healthcare models, including a problem-solving model for nurse managers that has had positive impacts on patient satisfaction and the quality and cost of care.
The program is an initiative of the University’s Heilbrunn Family Center for Research Nursing.

2013 The Beatrice Renfield Lectureship in Research Nursing: Research and Innovations in Nursing
and Health Care
Speaker:
Diana Mason, PhD, RN, FAAN, Rudin Professor Nursing, Co-Director, Center for Health, Media & Policy, Hunter College, City University of New York
Description:
The U.S. is faced with the challenge of improving the health of the population and the quality of health care, while reducing costs. Nurses are poised to help the nation in its quest to meet these aims and, historically, have been innovators in health care. The American Academy of Nursing’s Raise the Voice Campaign has sought to highlight contemporary nurses’ innovations. An analysis of the work of these “Edge Runners” reveals that there are common themes across nurse-led innovations, including a focus on the goals of the individual, family or community of interest.
Furthermore, research can provide the foundation for the innovation or be a necessary condition of spreading a successful model of care or intervention. Yet challenges in conducting such research persist and include issues of design, the innovators’ preparation in research, funding, and ethics. Diana J. Mason, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, a national leader in nursing, health policy and media, will address these issues, focusing on current and future research on nurse-led innovations in health care.

2012 The Beatrice Renfield Lectureship in Research Nursing: Past, Present, and Future of Clinical Research Nursing
Speaker:
Clare Hastings, PhD, RN, FAAN, Chief for Nursing and Patient Care Services, NIH Clinical Center
Session Goals:
Nurses play an important role as members of the multidisciplinary research team; they help to address challenges associated with translating basic research (from the bench) to clinical practice (at the bedside). Although nurses have always been involved in direct care of human subjects, the role of nurses in research required further clarification. The presenter will provide an historical overview of clinical research nursing and describe a recent role delineation study which helped define Clinical Research Nursing Practice. A five dimensional model of Clinical Research Nursing Practice which includes: (1) Clinical Practice, (2) Study Management, (3) Care Coordination and Continuity, (4) Contributing to Science, and (5) Human Subjects Protection will be discussed. Future research for Clinical Research Nursing (CRN) as a specialty within nursing practice will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the role of the nurse as an important member of the multidisciplinary clinical research team
2. Identify an historical nursing figure who participated in clinical research nursing
3. Describe the difference between Clinical Research Nursing and Research Nurse Coordinators
4. Identify five dimensions of Clinical Research Nursing Practice including: (1) Clinical Practice, (2) Study Management, (3) Care Coordination and Continuity, (4) Contributing to Science, and (5) Human Subjects Protection
5. Discuss the role of Clinical Research Nurses in ongoing informed consent and ensuring the integrity of data collection
